We are looking for land managers, land owners and private investors to take part in two online workshops around market-based approaches to fund peatland restoration.
About the project
The Great North Bog (GNB) is an ambitious, grand-scale peatland restoration initiative developed by six regional partnerships. It is a landscape-scale approach to upland peatland restoration and conservation across nearly 7000 square kilometers of peatland soils in the Protected Landscapes of northern England, currently storing 400 million tonnes of carbon. A recent review on the Ecosystem Services of Peatland Restoration completed by the University of Manchester included a summary of the possible frameworks for market-based approaches to attract private sector funding for peatlands. The review highlights several case studies showing investment into peatland restoration via private companies, and four potential approaches for
landowners and project developers.
About the workshops
You are invited to discuss and inform an assessment of these market-based approaches and which of them might work best for the GNB from your perspective. This workshop will start with a clear explanation of each financial model, its viability and how it might impact the ecosystem and economy of the region, and continue with discussions where you have the opportunity to present your view point on the pros and cons of each model. The key aim is to understand which framework has the greatest chance of implementation and success. The GNB team will collate the responses and summarise the business viability of the suggested models.
